Commissioner, planner weighs City Council run Although her paperwork is in order, Vergis, 25, said her campaign is still in the exploratory stage. She is speaking with elected officials, city employees, and friends and neighbors to get a better idea of what Davis needs and if she is the right person for the job. "I'm still thinking about it, still learning, still talking to people," Vergis said. "I don't have any agenda at this point, but my personal passions are planning, the Tree Commission and all this green stuff everyone is interested in." Vergis works for the Sutter Local Agency Formation Commission. As a senior planner for Sutter County, she is working to preserve habitat there. She's also interested in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through smart planning, a concept making its way through several state agencies. Vergis came to Davis in 2001 to attend UC Davis, where she double-majored in economics and environmental policy, analysis and planning. She held several internships during her college career, working as a policy analyst for the governor's office and the Assembly Committee on Agriculture, and as an assistant financial adviser at Morgan Stanley. After graduating, Vergis landed a job at Quad Knopf Inc. as an assistant planner before moving on to Pacific Municipal Consultants as a senior planner. Last month, she started her job in Sutter County. She has served on the city's Tree Commission since 2005. "I've hit this point in my career where I can dedicate this time," Vergis said. "As I've become involved, I've wanted to see if I can dedicate more of my time. Call it extreme volunteerism." Vergis said she will decide whether to run for City Council sometime after the new year. Either way, she expects to stay involved in Davis. "I like it here; I've stuck around for a while and I don't think I'm going anywhere," she said. She'd also like to hear from the public. "It would be great if people would tell me what they want in a City Council member," she said, offering up her e-mail address, sydney@sydneyvergis.com. If Vergis decides to run, she'll be vying for one of three available seats. Council members Don Saylor and Stephen Souza have formally announced their intentions to run for re-election, former Human Relations Commission Chairwoman Cecilia Escamilla Greenwald filed a candidate intention statement with the city and Mayor Sue Greenwald said she intends to run for re-election.
