Vergis the first to file papers

Davis City Council candidate Sydney Vergis made it official this week - she filed the election season's first nomination papers 24 hours after the submission period opened on Monday.

Candidates have until March 12 to file nomination papers to run for Davis City Council. If at least one incumbent doesn't file, the deadline is extended to March 17.

There are two council seats open in the June 8 election. Councilman Lamar Heystek has said he will not seek re-election, and Mayor Ruth Asmundson has not decided if she wants to serve a third term.

So far, only Vergis and Joe Krovoza have announced their intentions to run.

Krovoza, 46, said he will be filing nomination papers in early March, 'well before the deadline.' His campaign has raised $7,675 between July and December last year, according to the first set of financial statements turned in on Feb. 1.

Krovoza is vice chairman of the Bicycle Advisory Commission and one of the founders of Davis Bicycles! He coordinates the Davis Bicycles! bi-weekly column in The Davis Enterprise.

He plans to announce the details of his platform at a campaign party scheduled for tonight. Updates on Krovoza's campaign can be found on his Web site, http://www.joeforcitycouncil.org.

Vergis, 27, released her ballot statement when she filed her nomination papers. She plans to focus her campaign on economic stability and environmental sustainability.

'Working together, we can develop thoughtful policies that enhance our community and save taxpayer dollars,' Vergis says in her statement. Vergis says she wants to establish policies, such as 'green-tech zones,' where the city offers incentives for eco-friendly businesses to locate downtown and in neighborhood shopping centers.

She also supports managing insfrastructure projects with 'diligent oversight and encouraging conservation,' partnering with the school district and county government to share facilities and resources, and improving Davis' biking and walking pathways system.

Vergis is a graduate student of transportation, technology and policy at UC Davis, vice president of the TREE Davis board of directors, a member of the Davis Business and Economic Development Commission, and a former senior land-use planner for Sutter County.

She ran for Davis City Council in 2008 and lost by less than 750 votes. In this election, she is continuing the green ethos of her first campaign.

'My campaign is committee is committed to making the campaign as green as Davis can be,' said Vergis, who raised $6,733 between July and December. 'A number of bike-centered events are planned for all ages, and the campaign is urging voters to register for 'paperless' campaign information to minimize the campaign's use of paper mailings.'

Voters can subscribe to e-mail updates on Vergis' Web site, http://www.sydneyvergis.com.

Vergis is also planning a 'campaign coffee' event at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Brian and Louanne Horsfield. Those interested in attending can RSVP by e-mailing clc6000@aol.com.
